Network switch is often design redundant paths to provide reliability and fault tolerance, such that switch looping is formed. In order to maintain the loop free topology, Spanning Tree Protocol is introduced. If the switch or bridge detects loop in the topology, the redundant ports would be blocked automatically. Even if there is a failure or an addition of a link, switch or bridge that resulted in the changed topology, Spanning Tree Protocol automatically reconfigure the ports to avoid connection loss.
